Hurricane Dorian: Meal and Snack Ideas

As Hurricane Dorian approaches, there’s still time to prepare your food and water supplies. From cereal and shelf-stable milk to pre-made chili, here is a grocery list and some meals and snacks to help you get prepared for the storm.

While some options may require a camp stove or grill, there are several no-cook options. When it comes to condiments, we recommend using individually wrapped condiments so they don’t go to waste if you lose power.


– Eggs
– Bread/tortillas
– Ready-to-eat canned meats and vegetables (some cans may require a can opener)
– Fruit that can be kept at room temp: fruit cups, canned juices, dried fruit, fruit bars, applesauce, oranges, apples, bananas, frozen berries, lemons, limes
– Fresh veggies that can be kept at room temp: avocados, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, pickles
– Dry cereal or granola
– Peanut butter and jelly
– Soy/almond shelf-stable milk
– Trail mix


– Hard boiled eggs and fruit
– Cereal and soy/almond milk
– Bread with avocado spread and sliced tomato
– Peanut butter wrap: spread peanut butter on a tortilla and layer with sliced bananas, chocolate chips and granola
– Granola bar and fruit
– Trail mix and fruit
– Peanut butter and crackers
– Frozen berries: a refreshing snack, especially when the power goes out!


– Pre-make chili and freeze it. Reheat over camp stove or grill
– Cook pasta over camp stove or grill and serve with heated canned marinara sauce
– Cold-cut sandwiches and wraps with sliced tomatoes and cucumbers served with fruit
– Zucchini noodle salad: use a spiralizer or veggie peeler and serve with dressing of your choice (easy dressing: 3 tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar, pinch of salt and pepper, 1 tablespoon lemon juice)
– Peanut butter wrap: spread peanut butter on a tortilla and layer with dried fruit, granola and fresh sliced apples
– Grill burgers and hotdogs and serve with fruit/veggies
– Season defrosting meats with dried spices, grill and serve with heated canned veggies
– Canned tuna and crackers with sliced tomato
