Inaugural Veterans Celebration honored Lake Nona service men and women

November 23, 2020

This year, we honored local Veterans and their families like never before with the inaugural ‘Home of the Brave’ Veterans Celebration held in Lake Nona Town Center.

Local Veterans from across our Lake Nona community joined the celebration decked out in their best red, white, and blues – and a mask in accordance with enhanced health and safety measures in place throughout the evening.

The night kicked off with the presentation of colors by the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps and honor guard by the American Pride Squadron from Lake Nona High School.

Orlando VA Medical Center Director Timothy Cooke led the evening’s festivities filled with love and respect for our community of Veterans as the names of Lake Nona service members were featured prominently on The Beacon. The event also included words of admiration from Congressman Darren Soto, Marine Veteran and State Senator Victor M. Torres, Jr.,  Air Force Veteran and City Commissioner Jim Gray, and Orange County Commissioner Maribel Gomez Cordero.

In a truly touching moment, one local Vietnam Veteran, Captain John Thatcher of the U.S. Army, was presented with the 50th anniversary service pin dedicated for those who served in the Vietnam War.

The event also featured a special performance by the Nona Liberty Singers who serenaded attendees with a medley of songs representing each branch of the armed forces and performed a special musical tribute to the American flag.

In honor and remembrance of fallen, missing, or imprisoned military service members, a display of empty chairs was placed in front of the stage.

Throughout the evening, guests were able to get up close and personal with vintage military vehicles and connect with local Veterans groups, including the Lake Nona Veterans Club who co-sponsored the event with Tavistock Development Company, KPMG and Beep.

The special night of honor, remembrance, and gratitude was live-streamed for those who could not attend in person. Relive every incredible moment and powerful performance on Lake Nona’s Facebook.
