When Alex Bennett arrived at Lake Nona in the fall of 2009, he had dreams of building a state-title contender in water polo.

There was one problem.

“The players didn’t know what water polo was,” said Bennett, who won nine state titles at Miami Gulliver Prep, including eight straight with the girls team. “I was scared that they weren’t interested, and we weren’t even going to have a team.”

One player, Cole Hamre, wore board shorts the first day of spring practice. Another, Michael Martinac, barely could swim 50 yards. Taylor Bullock would be so tired after workouts that she would fall asleep with her homework in her lap. Read more
